Giant Forest Museum

Giant Forest Museum is a small museum and visitor center in the Giant Forest sequoia grove, inside the grove’s former market building at 6,500 feet. It’s a useful introduction before you head out: hands-on displays cover giant-sequoia ecology, and the plaza opens straight onto the trees and trails. Treat it as a short indoor stop, then make time for a walk outside.

Self-guided paths lead from the museum toward Round Meadow and Hazelwood, and the Big Trees Trail loops around Round Meadow. Boardwalks, bridges and split-rail fences carry the trail through sensitive spots. A large sequoia stands beside the plaza, so you can get a close look before following the paths into the grove and meadow.

The long, one-story log building was once the Giant Forest market. It’s one of only four buildings the National Park Service retained in Giant Forest. Renovation started in 1999, and the museum and visitor center opened in 2001, giving the old village building a new role as a place to learn about sequoias and the people who lived and worked here.

Hours vary by season, and weather or operational closures can interrupt a visit, so check current hours before making the drive up. In the non-quota wilderness permit season, self-issue permits are available at the museum plaza.
