Ndutu Airstrip

Overview

Ndutu Airstrip is a simple bush strip near Lake Ndutu on the border of the southern Serengeti and Ngorongoro Conservation Area. If you’d rather skip the 6–7 hour drive from Arusha or Kilimanjaro, short hops (about an hour) drop you right into prime wildlife country. The runway is unpaved and sized for small aircraft, and the vibe is decidedly wild—think safari vehicles, dust, and big skies rather than a formal terminal.

What’s Here (and what isn’t)

• Facilities: basic toilets, a small lounge/shelter, and a modest parking area for safari vehicles.
• Services: don’t count on shops, ATMs, or regular food/drink service—bring water and snacks. You might occasionally find coffee for sale, but treat it as a bonus, not a guarantee.
• Operations: limited to bush flights (operators commonly service Ndutu) on a short, roughly 1.3 km dirt strip; hours ebb and flow with flight schedules.

Wildlife Angle

This airstrip sits in the thick of the Ndutu action. From December to March vast herds gather on the short-grass plains, with peak calving typically in January–February. That influx draws predators—lions are commonly encountered, cheetah are possible, while specials like wild dog or black rhino are far less reliable. Don’t be surprised if plains game wander right by the runway; zebra are known to graze nearby.

Logistics & Transfers

Most travelers connect directly with nearby camps and lodges; pickups are easily arranged and many camps plan around these flights. Accommodation choices often dictate flight times, so coordinate your timing with your camp. Between flights the strip can feel very quiet; ask your driver or lodge to meet you with water and confirm restroom access if you have a wait.

Best Time to Visit

• For wildlife: December–March is the sweet spot, especially January–February for calving.
• For smoother ground time: early mornings are usually quieter than late morning to midafternoon when flights bunch up. Between scheduled arrivals/departures, expect minimal bustle.

Fees & Boundaries

Ndutu straddles two protected areas—the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area—so park fees vary depending on which side you’re entering from or staying in. Your camp or operator will handle the specifics.

Nice-to-Know

If you’re building out a longer day, the Oldupai Gorge museum is about an hour’s drive from the Ndutu area and pairs well with arrival or departure days.
