More about Elkhorn Campground

A quiet overnight baseElkhorn Campground is a developed campground in the Little Missouri National Grassland, outside…

Elkhorn Campground is a developed campground in the Little Missouri National Grassland, outside Theodore Roosevelt National Park and north of Medora. It makes a practical overnight base for visiting the remote Elkhorn Ranch unit or hiking the Maah Daah Hey Trail. Expect a quiet, partly shaded setting. The historic ranch is a separate destination, not part of the campground.

What to expectSites are first come, first served, with no reservations.

Sites are first come, first served, with no reservations. You’ll find picnic tables, fire rings, vault toilets (including an accessible unit), and no electrical hookups. A hand pump is described as seasonal, but its drinking-water status is unclear; bring your own water. Services are limited after Labor Day and before Memorial Day, and there’s no food service listed, so bring meals. Pets are allowed on leash.

Keep the road to the ranch in perspectiveThe Maah Daah Hey Trail trailhead is about half a mile east.

The Maah Daah Hey Trail trailhead is about half a mile east. To visit Elkhorn Ranch, continue past the campground and trailhead to a separate parking area three miles farther on, then walk 0.7 mile to the cabin foundations. The last three road miles can require four-wheel drive or high clearance, especially in winter or after rain; cell service is absent along much of the route.
