Getting there

The trailhead is about 10.5 miles into the South Unit, on the west side of East River Road. Parking serves cars and larger vehicles; there is no separate activity fee for the walk, though the park entrance pass or fee applies. The loop is year-round, but wet or otherwise poor weather can make its uneven, exposed sections slippery.

Wind Canyon is a wind-carved canyon in Theodore Roosevelt National Park's South Unit, known for smooth walls, spire-like hoodoos, and a broad view over the Little Missouri River. A short loop follows the canyon edge to a lookout above the river bend. If you want one quick walk with a big landscape payoff, this is a good one to choose.

Follow the rim to the lookoutThe loop is listed at 0.

The loop is listed at 0.3 mile and usually takes 5 to 30 minutes, depending on your pace and how long you stay at the view. It starts beside the parking area, threads through short shrubs and past sandstone spires, then climbs to the lookout. There's a small seat about halfway; the rise uses widely spaced steps, so the short distance doesn't mean smooth or level footing.

Watch the edges and the footingThe path is unpaved, with loose gravel, uneven ground, and steep sections.

The path is unpaved, with loose gravel, uneven ground, and steep sections. The canyon edge is unstable in places, so keep back from the drop rather than edging closer for a view. The parking area has accessible spaces, but the trail itself has steps and rough footing. Pets aren't allowed on the trail.

Wind funnels through the canyon and out across the river, and the walls show the work in hollows and smooth, broken contours. Look for the spire-shaped hoodoos and the scooped-out pockets in the reddish rock. Those hollows also give Great Horned Owls and other birds places to nest; you may not see one, but the wall is more than a backdrop.

From the lookout, the canyon opens west over the Little Missouri, with a winding river, wooded valley, badlands, and open sky. Sunset is a particularly good time to see the layers change, though the wind and light are never guaranteed. Keep the river bend in your photo; it gives the surrounding cliffs and badlands a sense of scale.

The park's badlands formed from ancient river deposits of sand, silt, and mud, with volcanic ash weathering into bentonite. Later changes to regional drainage sent the Little Missouri cutting through those softer layers. Wind Canyon is a close, easy-to-reach example of that ongoing erosion, with both rounded hollows and narrow spires visible from the path.
