Painted Canyon is a rim-top overlook and visitor-center/rest-area beside the layered badlands of Theodore Roosevelt National Park’s South Unit. It sits just off I-94 at Exit 32, about seven miles east of Medora. Keep it in your plan for a quick, easy view of the badlands; the South Unit Scenic Drive starts in Medora, so Painted Canyon is not that entrance.

A paved sidewalk follows the rim just behind the visitor center, so the main panorama is only a short walk from the parking area. Across the canyon, look for Buck Hill above the colored buttes; the Painted Canyon Trail drops below the rim as a separate hike. For a photo, frame Buck Hill with the canyon’s bands of color to show both the landmark and the layers around it.

The rocks began as river deposits about 65 million years ago, carrying sediment from the young Rocky Mountains along with ash from volcanoes farther west. Around two million years ago, continental ice sheets changed the course of ancient rivers, sending more water toward the Missouri and increasing erosion here. The different layers wear down at different speeds: harder sandstone can protect softer clay beneath it, leaving the broken buttes and caps you see from the rim.

Bison often visit this part of the park and sometimes graze near the center or parking area. A sighting is never guaranteed, but it can turn a quick viewpoint break into a wildlife stop. Watch them from a distance and don’t walk between animals.

When the seasonal visitor center is open, you’ll find park information, maps, exhibits, a bookstore and snack-and-drink vending machines. A picnic pavilion and tables make this an easy place to pause, though it’s a snack stop rather than a meal stop. Public flush restrooms are in a separate building; whether they stay accessible when the visitor center is closed isn’t clear, so don’t count on year-round access to every service.
