Paddock Creek Trail

Overview

Paddock Creek is the South Unit’s long, river‑bottom route that cuts across the badlands and grasslands of Theodore Roosevelt National Park. It’s split by the scenic drive into Lower and Upper sections, but together the full traverse runs about 10.6 miles one way. Expect broad views, prairie dog towns, and a real chance of bison, wild horses, and deer. Terrain is mostly gentle, with short, steeper climbs in and out of wash bottoms and the occasional messy crossing.

Route Options & Distances

• Full traverse: roughly 10.6 miles one way from the western end near Halliday/Peaceful Valley Ranch to the Rim/Talkington junction on the east plateau. Arrange a shuttle or be ready to backtrack.
• Lower Paddock Creek (out and back): about 7.4 miles total with roughly 500 feet of gain—generally easy to moderate, great wildlife viewing.
• Upper Paddock Creek (out and back): commonly recorded near 17.1 miles total with around 1,400+ feet of gain—moderate with some steep hills and messy stream crossings. The east end meets Rim/Talkington; starting from Painted Canyon adds about 4 miles round trip via the connector.
• Loop linkups: Lower Paddock combines nicely with Jones Creek and Lower Talkington for an 11.4‑mile day. Upper Paddock pairs with Upper Talkington for a burlier 15.4‑mile loop (about 19.4 miles if you start at Painted Canyon).

What It’s Like

Much of the trail meanders along Paddock Creek’s sandy flats, crossing dry or shallow flows depending on season and recent storms. After rain, expect sticky gumbo and slippery banks. Grasses can grow over sections, and on the Upper end near the rim, braided use‑paths can make the tread feel vague—bring a park map or GPS to confirm junctions with Rim and Talkington. Shade is scarce; plan water and sun protection accordingly.

Access & Parking

For the Lower section, turn toward Peaceful Valley Ranch off the main park road and continue to the end of the gravel spur; you’ll find the trail near prairie dog towns. Parking at the road crossing is limited. On the east side, continue to the Rim/Talkington junction on the plateau; Painted Canyon sits atop the rim if you’re arranging a shuttle or adding the connector. A park entry fee is required to use roads and trails—confirm current access and any closures at a visitor center.

Wildlife & Etiquette

You’re in prime bison country. Give herds—especially cows with calves—a wide berth and detour as needed. Prairie dogs are practically guaranteed on the Lower end, and wild horses and deer are possible. Carry insect repellent in warmer months; flies and ticks pick up after spring. Hikers yield to horseback riders. Inside the park, pets, bicycles, and motorized equipment aren’t allowed on trails. Pack out all trash and keep human waste 200 feet from water.

Best Time to Hike

Spring and fall bring cooler temps, wildflowers (spring), and fewer bugs. After storms or during spring melt, expect more water in the creek and slick mud. Summer is hot and exposed—start early for shade and calmer wildlife, and consider weekdays for even quieter conditions. Golden hours light up the buttes beautifully; morning is especially pleasant in the creek bottoms.

Is It Worth It?

If you want a quieter, more wildlife‑forward experience than the road pullouts offer, Paddock Creek delivers. The Lower section is a fantastic half‑day sampler; the full traverse feels satisfyingly wild. For bigger vistas and stronger climbs, consider linking with Talkington or sampling Buck Hill and the Painted Canyon Nature Trail nearby.
