Overview

Boicourt Overlook is the South Unit’s classic badlands panorama—layered buttes, open grasslands, and big sky in every direction. It sits roughly halfway along the scenic drive, making it an easy, high‑reward stop whether you’re sampling overlooks or doing the full loop.

The Walk

From the parking pullouts, a short paved path (about 0.2 miles) leads to the main viewpoint with benches. If you want the best, most expansive vistas, continue beyond the pavement along a narrow dirt ridge to a second overlook. Many visitors who add this extension log roughly 0.8 miles round trip with minimal elevation change (~55 feet). The ridge can feel exposed and is noticeably windier; skip it if you’re uneasy with drop‑offs or if conditions are blustery.

What You’ll See

This perch looks deep into the Little Missouri Badlands—colorful bands of sandstone, siltstone, and bentonite carved by water over millions of years. Keep your eyes on the valleys below for bison; across the broader South Unit, elk, mule deer, pronghorn, prairie dogs, and raptors are also possible sightings.

Conditions and Practicalities

Wind is the wild card here. Gusts can be strong on the ridge—secure hats and consider a light layer even on warm days. After rain, the dirt section can get sticky and muddy. There are multiple pullouts near the trail start, but there are no restrooms at this stop, so plan your facilities breaks at visitor centers or major picnic areas along the route.

Best Time to Visit

Late afternoon into sunset is prime for warm, sculpted light and long views. Early morning is quieter and can be good for spotting wildlife moving in the cool hours. If you’re driving the South Unit loop, budget extra time for short walks and photo stops so you’re not rushed when the light turns golden.

• Park at the middle pullout to start the paved path to the main overlook.
• For the grandest panorama, carefully continue along the dirt ridge if you’re comfortable with narrow footing and exposure.
