Overview
Skyline Vista is the definition of big views for minimal effort. This paved, flat, wheelchair-accessible path leads to an overlook atop Johnson’s Plateau in the South Unit. Expect a total of 0.1–0.2 miles out-and-back with roughly 16 feet of gentle elevation gain, and plan 5–10 minutes door-to-door. It’s often one of the first stops you’ll encounter after entering the South Unit—perfect for stretching your legs and orienting yourself to the landscape.
Scenery and Wildlife
From the overlook you’ll get wide-open views of the Little Missouri River, the western horizon, and the surrounding badlands—layered buttes, striped sediments, and grassland textures that pop in raking light. Sunrise and sunset are particularly beautiful here when the badlands glow and shadows carve depth. Keep an eye out for wildlife in the surrounding prairie: bison and prairie dogs are commonly spotted, and wild horses are occasionally seen in the South Unit. Enjoy the spectacle from a safe distance.
