Wind Canyon Trail

Overview

A short loop with outsize payoff, Wind Canyon Trail skims along wind‑sculpted cliffs above the Little Missouri River in the South Unit. It’s an easy 0.4‑mile loop (total) with minimal elevation gain and typically takes about 20 minutes. If you only have time for one quick stop on the Scenic Loop Drive, make it this one—especially for sunset.

Trail Conditions & Difficulty

The path is unpaved with uneven footing, some steps, and occasional loose gravel—proper footwear helps. There are exposed drop‑offs near the rim; keep well back from edges and keep kids close. Expect wind (it’s in the name), which can amplify slip hazards. You’ll find a small seating area roughly halfway around.

What You’ll See

This is classic North Dakota badlands: layered sedimentary rock and bentonite clay carved by the Little Missouri River, with wind and water shaping smooth contours and caprock features. The overlook peers into a sweeping river bend that glows at golden hour. Keep an eye out for bison in the surrounding hills, plus mule deer, pronghorn, prairie dogs, and raptors or owls using cavities in the canyon walls.

Best Time to Hike

Sunset is the headline act—the light ignites the badlands and the river below. Sunrise is quieter and lovely if you want solitude and cooler temps. Weekends and midday in peak season draw more people; aim for early or late in the day for easier parking and better photography.

Regulations & Safety

Stay on the marked trail and away from cliff edges. Do not remove rocks, flowers, or any natural/cultural resources, and don’t carve or paint on features. Give wildlife plenty of space. Pets are not permitted on park trails; service animals are allowed when leashed (6 ft max).

• Bring water and a wind layer; the rim can be gusty.
