Beds, food and camp facilities

The refuge has shared mixed bunk rooms for up to 60; the rooms are unheated, while common areas have wood heat. Shared bathrooms have hot showers. Campers have a sheltered communal cooking area, and cooking is restricted to that spot. A restaurant serves meals and lunch boxes, the bar has drinks, and the mini-market carries basic groceries and trek snacks. Wi-Fi is paid and there is no mobile phone signal in the park; electricity is switched off overnight. Drinking-water status is unclear, so check before relying on tap water.

More about Refugio y Camping Grey

A remote base in the Grey sectorRefugio y Camping Grey is a mountain refuge with an associated campground in the park’s Grey…

Refugio y Camping Grey is a mountain refuge with an associated campground in the park’s Grey sector beside Lago Grey. It is the closest refuge to Grey Glacier and a useful overnight stop on the W or O circuit. Treat it as a trek destination, not a roadside attraction.

Plan the approachFrom Paine Grande, the trail to Grey is about 11 km and takes around 4.

From Paine Grande, the trail to Grey is about 11 km and takes around 4.5 hours at moderate difficulty. You can also arrive by boat from Lago Grey; the O Circuit route from Los Perros is a much harder 18 km, roughly 10–12 hours. Reserve ahead, confirm opening dates for your trip, and check the boat departure that matches your route: the available season details are inconsistent, and a missed connection changes the hike.

The refuge is a base for glacier hikes, kayaking and the walk to the Grey Glacier suspension bridges. The bridges are the excursion for broad views across the Southern Patagonian Ice Field; the glacier itself is not the view from the campground. From the refuge terrace, Cordón Olguín frames the sector, and condors may glide there when conditions allow.
