The middle Grey lookoutMirador Lago Grey is a stone platform on the W Trek between Paine Grande and Refugio Grey.

Mirador Lago Grey is a stone platform on the W Trek between Paine Grande and Refugio Grey. It looks across Grey Lake to Grey Glacier, far away between dark mountain massifs. This is the mid-route lake panorama, not the closer glacier-front viewpoint beyond the refuge. Come for the broad landscape, rather than expecting to stand beside the ice.

From Paine Grande, one walking itinerary puts the lookout about 3.7 miles (6 km) away, roughly two hours each way. Allow about four hours on foot for the return to Paine Grande. The longer Grey-sector route continues beyond the viewpoint. A road-based day visit also depends on the boat connection to Paine Grande, so check current trail and crossing arrangements before you commit.

The route crosses the Pingo River on a wooden suspension bridge, passes through lenga and coigüe forest, reaches a dark-sand beach, then climbs a low rise to the stone platform. The trees and beach break up the walk before the more exposed lookout. Strong wind and cold are part of the conditions here, so bring a windproof layer and hat. The route is generally recommended from October to March.

Keep the glacier in perspectiveGrey Glacier appears between the massifs, but it is distant from the platform.

Grey Glacier appears between the massifs, but it is distant from the platform. A medium or long telephoto lens helps if you want glacier detail; the lake-and-mountains panorama is the payoff with any lens. Keep the lake in the foreground, and give the view time in case cloud hides the ice before lifting.
