Grassy Bay Cliffs

Grassy Bay Cliffs is a sheer granite face rising 125 feet above Sand Point Lake, among the highest points in Voyageurs National Park. The pines along its rim make the rock wall look even taller from the water. Make it a destination if you're traveling Sand Point Lake by boat; this is not a roadside pullout or a walk-up viewpoint.

The park describes access by boat in summer and snowmobile in winter. It does not identify a public landing or an on-foot route at the cliffs, so plan to take in the face from the lake rather than assuming you can reach the rim. Water levels can leave some rock hazards unmarked; carry a navigation chart and don't rely on GPS alone.

The cliff rises straight from the water, with pine trees growing along the top. The park's documented view includes kayaks below the wall. For a photo, keep some lake in the foreground; a boat or kayak there gives the sheer face a useful sense of scale.

The cliffs are Lac La Croix biotite granite, part of a batholith: magma that cooled underground. The National Park Service dates this intrusion to 2.64–2.69 billion years ago and describes it as the largest and youngest igneous intrusion in the area.

The granite landscape was later carved by at least four periods of glaciation. The most recent continental ice sheet retreated about 10,000 years ago, leaving scattered glacial boulders across Voyageurs.

There are no amenities at this destination. Bring food, water and anything else you need before heading out on the lake, and plan your restroom stop elsewhere.
