“The garden beside Rainy Lake Visitor Center has taken a lot of work to keep from becoming a field of invasive grass. Reed canary grass shades out other plants and spreads through underground stems.”

More about Little American Island

A short history stop on Rainy LakeLittle American Island is a small, forested island in Rainy Lake with a self-guided path…

Little American Island is a small, forested island in Rainy Lake with a self-guided path through an 1890s gold-mine site. The quarter-mile walk passes mine shafts, tailings and old machinery, including a hoist wheel, with an overlook toward the old gold fields. I’d make time for it if you want to walk through the mining story itself, rather than only see the lake from a boat. It’s a compact history stop, not a long hike.

Getting onto the islandYou can reach the island only by boat.

You can reach the island only by boat. It lies about two miles from Rainy Lake Visitor Center, north around Sha Sha Point, and the dock is on the northwest side. Make sure a charter or water taxi confirms an island landing; current park tour listings don’t promise this stop. The interpretive path is crushed gravel, about four feet wide, with a short switchback climb and descent. The park describes the walk as accessible but gives no slope measurement, so check with the park if that matters for your mobility. There’s a vault toilet near the dock; don’t count on finding food or potable water on the island.

The gold here was locked in bedrock, so miners had to blast shafts and bring ore out instead of panning loose gold from a stream. They hauled it by boat or winter sled to a stamp mill at Rainy Lake City, where machinery crushed the rock and mercury was used to recover the gold. The mine openings and equipment on the island make that hard-rock process easier to picture.

A brief rushProspector George W.

Prospector George W. Davis found a gold-bearing quartz vein near Black Bay Narrows in 1893, and Charles Moore joined him in staking the claim. Mining helped nearby Rainy Lake City grow in 1894, but production was low; the boom faded by 1898 and the town was a ghost town by 1901. The island is one of the places where that short-lived rush still has a physical trace.

Gold in ancient cracksThe gold-bearing veins formed long before the mine.

The gold-bearing veins formed long before the mine. Mineral-rich fluids moved through fault cracks during mountain building and earthquakes, then deposited minerals as pressure fell. That’s why the story here is about working gold out of hard rock, not panning it from the lake.

A forested island againAt the height of mining, much of the island was cleared for timber to fuel the stamp mill.

At the height of mining, much of the island was cleared for timber to fuel the stamp mill. It’s wooded now, so look for the mine remains along the marked walk rather than expecting a bare industrial site.
