Before you go

A boat-access heritage stop

William Ingersoll Estate is a former summer-home complex on Ingersoll Island in Sand Point Lake. It is one of the park's boat-access destinations, so it fits a boat outing with time for a historic stop. The map pin marks the island, not a confirmed landing; arrange a safe landing and shore approach before routing to it. No food, water, restroom, or building-entry details are documented for the site, so plan to be self-sufficient and view the surviving buildings from outside unless access is confirmed.

More about William Ingersoll Estate

From cabin to summer compoundWilliam P. Ingersoll bought the 7.

William P. Ingersoll bought the 7.58-acre island in 1927 and had a prefabricated cabin built there the next year by the E. F. Hodgson Company. Over the following decades he expanded the retreat into a summer compound, spending about four months each year on the island. He sold it in 1962.

What survives on the islandThe original 1928 main cabin collapsed in 2014 and was removed.

The original 1928 main cabin collapsed in 2014 and was removed. Four structures remain: the six-room Chiperfield Cabin, built for Ingersoll's friend Robert Chiperfield; a circa-1952 generator shed; the boathouse; and a workshop and storage building later fitted with an icehouse, sauna, and fish-cleaning station. Stone paths, garden beds, and fencing formed part of the designed landscape, with the buildings sited for privacy and lake views. Where you have a clear permitted view, the Chiperfield Cabin's long glazed porch and stone steps make the strongest close-up; older photos of the main cabin show a building that is gone.
