Kettle Falls Hotel

Kettle Falls Hotel is a historic hotel, restaurant, and bar in Voyageurs National Park’s remote Kettle Falls district, between Rainy and Namakan lakes. It is the park’s only lodging and the only place to buy a meal inside the park. Built in 1913, it’s worth the effort for a night in a genuine wilderness outpost, a meal far from the road, or a look around the famously tilted bar. This is a destination to plan for, not an accidental stop: the approach takes a boat, floatplane, or seasonal winter transport.

The hotel is roughly 15 miles from the nearest road, and there is no road arrival. In summer, visitors reach it by boat or floatplane. Lodging guests can arrange a hotel shuttle; day visitors should plan their own boat or a park tour or private guide rather than assuming the hotel shuttle takes day visitors. In winter, snowmobiles are another access mode. Confirm seasonal schedules and transport before setting out.

Reception, the dining room, and bar occupy the first floor; the small hotel bedrooms are upstairs and share bathrooms. Separate villas have private baths. It’s a simple historic stay, not a modern resort, and the long screened porch—with chairs and tables—is an easy place to settle after the trip in.

The hotel bar is called the LumberJack Saloon and is also known as the Tiltin’ Hilton, a nod to its famous sloping floor. It’s the building’s most distinctive oddity. For a photo of the hotel itself, step back into the yard to fit the long white facade, red roof, striped awnings, and screened porch in one frame; the entrance canopy makes a good closer detail.

The restaurant serves sit-down breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and it’s the park’s only place to purchase food. A trading post about a five-minute walk away sells basic groceries, snacks, ice cream, and boating and fishing supplies. Public restrooms and potable drinking water are listed among the hotel’s amenities. No particular dish should be the reason for the trip; expect a remote-outpost meal rather than polished resort dining.

Kettle Falls was a gathering and travel place long before the hotel. Indigenous people gathered and hunted here and speared sturgeon at the falls. Later, voyageurs paddled and portaged goods and furs through the border wilderness. The crossing remained important to people moving between the lakes, and the water level difference—about 10 feet—is now controlled by dams at Kettle Falls and Squirrel Falls.

Dam construction began around 1910, bringing stonecutters and masons to the area alongside prospectors, loggers, commercial fishers, trappers, and traders. Timber cruiser Ed Rose built the hotel, which opened in 1913. It was reputedly financed by Madame Nellie Bly. In 1918 Robert Williams bought it for $1,000 and four barrels of whiskey; the Williams family became associated with its home cooking and hospitality. As logging and commercial fishing declined, tourism and recreational fishing became more important, and the hotel was renovated in 1987.
