A classic Northwoods basecamp on Lake Kabetogama, Woodenfrog State Forest Campground sits just outside the park boundary in Kabetogama State Forest, giving you easy access to Voyageurs’ water-based playground without the crowds or costs of more developed campgrounds. Expect a peaceful, lakeside vibe and the basics done right.

What to Expect

There are roughly 61 primitive sites tucked among the trees, each with a cleared pad, fire ring, and picnic table. Facilities are intentionally simple: vault toilets, garbage cans, and seasonal drinking water. No electricity, sewer, or showers. A day-use area anchors the shoreline with a swimming beach, a public boat ramp, and an old CCC building that sometimes hosts interpretive talks.

If your plan is to fish, paddle, or boat the Kabetogama chain and hop into Voyageurs’ waters, this is a smart and economical launchpad. The setting is serene—forest, granite, and glassy water—so evenings often mean loon calls and big-sky sunsets over the lake.

The lake-and-forest mix here is prime for typical Northwoods sightings. Keep an eye out for bald eagles cruising shorelines, loons on the water, and the occasional deer in camp. Dusk and dawn are your best windows; scan coves for beavers or otters working the edges.
