Waterton Shoreline Cruise Dock

Overview

This marina-side dock in the Waterton townsite is the launch point for the park’s classic lake cruises. You’ll board historic vessels (including the often-mentioned MV International) for interpretive trips down Upper Waterton Lake, with standout views back to the Prince of Wales Hotel and sheer mountain walls rising from the water.

What Makes It Special

• Cross an international border by boat. The signature cruise runs the length of Upper Waterton to Goat Haunt, Montana, with a photo stop at the border line and, on some departures, a brief landing on the U.S. side.
• The boats have open upper decks for fresh-air views and enclosed lower seating if wind or weather picks up.
• Engaging guides weave in geology, history (including the 2017 fire), and natural history—this is a proper interpretive tour, not just a shuttle.

Scenery and Wildlife

From the dock you’ll head into a corridor of glaciated peaks, steep cliffs, forested shores, and occasional waterfalls. Keep an eye out for eagles, osprey, waterfowl, and even mountain goats on the cliff bands. Bears and other mammals show up occasionally—early or late runs tend to be quieter and can boost your odds.

Logistics You Should Know

• All departures are from the Waterton Marina (this dock). Public parking is nearby in the townsite.
• No bathrooms on the boats and none right on the dock—use townsite facilities before you line up.
• Seating is first-come, first-served. If you care where you sit (upper/lower, front/back), arrive early and queue.
• It can be windy and chilly on the lake even in midsummer; bring a warm layer if you plan to sit upstairs.
• Round-trip sightseeing does not require a passport, but you’ll need proper documents if you plan to stay or hike onward from Goat Haunt into the U.S.
• Sailings require a minimum of 8 adult passengers; shoulder-season or off-peak times can be affected.

Beyond sightseeing, the cruises connect you to trail access across the lake (e.g., Goat Haunt and, via separate service, Crypt Lake). If you’re planning to hike after you land, bring everything you need and choose a departure that matches your itinerary.

• Mornings are calmer on the water and less crowded; midday and weekend sailings are the busiest and can sell out.
• For photography, early and late light is best, with softer angles on the peaks and the Prince of Wales Hotel.
• On hot days, the top deck is sunny while in motion; on cool or windy days, the lower cabin is more comfortable.
