Old Lahaina Courthouse

Overview

For decades, the Old Lahaina Courthouse anchored Front Street as a compact, free museum on Lahaina’s past, with upstairs balcony views over the harbor and the famous Banyan Tree. Exhibits covered eras from Ancient Times through the Monarchy, Whaling/Missionary, and Plantation/Tourism, showcasing artifacts from Native Hawaiian culture, whaling tools, and everyday plantation items. A visit typically took 20–40 minutes, and donations were accepted.

History Snapshot

• Built 1858–1859 of coral block on the site of the Old Fort; materials included stone from Kamehameha III’s unfinished western palace.
• Served as court and customs house; on August 12, 1898, the American flag was raised here during annexation.
• Remodeled in 1925 with a Greek Revival look and second‑floor balcony; various government uses continued into the 1970s.
• Restored in 1998; later home to the Lahaina Visitor Center, Lahaina Arts Society galleries, and the Lahaina Heritage Museum.

What It Was Like (Pre‑2023)

Small but dense exhibits made this a worthwhile stop for history buffs. The upstairs balcony gave pretty angles of Lahaina Harbor and the Banyan Tree, and the museum’s era‑by‑era layout made it easy to digest in half an hour.

Current Status

The courthouse was destroyed in the August 8, 2023 Lahaina fire, and direct visits to the site and the immediate Banyan Tree Park area have been paused/limited. There are no on‑site services or exhibits to see at this time. Check access guidance before planning any stop here.

Is It Worth It?

When it was open, this was a quick, history‑rich detour rather than an all‑afternoon museum. For now, plan your time at other open West Maui stops while Lahaina’s recovery continues.

Best Time to Visit

If public access returns in the future, go mornings or late afternoons for cooler temps and softer light over the harbor, and pair it with a stroll under the Banyan Tree. Until then, do not enter any closed zones.
