The Franz–Fox region is a young landscape carved into very old rock. Along the Alpine Fault, the Southern Alps rise while wet, fast‑moving glaciers grind the valleys. Since the late‑1800s “Little Ice Age” peak, both glaciers have mostly retreated, leaving fresh moraines, terraces and stranded boulders. Expect raw slopes, frequent rockfall scars and a valley that’s always changing—exactly why current advice here matters.

Daily hours run 8:30 am–5:00 pm, but it closes for lunch on weekends and public holidays and is shut on Christmas Day.
