The Franz–Fox region is a young landscape carved into very old rock. Along the Alpine Fault, the Southern Alps rise while wet, fast‑moving glaciers grind the valleys. Since the late‑1800s “Little Ice Age” peak, both glaciers have mostly retreated, leaving fresh moraines, terraces and stranded boulders.
