Terrace Walk

Overview

A gentle, family‑friendly wander through lush rainforest right at the south end of Franz Josef village. This is the classic quick taste of the Glacier Region’s bush—and after dark, the track edges are dotted with glowworms. If you want a low‑effort, high‑reward leg‑stretch (or a nighttime novelty), this is it.

Distance and pace

Plan on about 1.8 km total (return) and roughly 30 minutes at an easy pace. It’s an out‑and‑back, and due to a slip there’s no access beyond the seats at the end—so you’ll return the way you came.

Trail character

The path is a compact forest track with the usual West Coast roots and occasional damp patches. Expect mostly gentle grades with a short steeper pinch. It’s peaceful, green, and close‑in—think ferns and mossy trunks rather than big glacier vistas.

Glowworms after dark

Glowworms are the headline act here. They’re best spotted under and around large fallen trees beside the track. Bring a small torch, keep it dim, and avoid shining light directly on the glow to see more of them. The forest gets very dark—great for glowworms, less so if you forgot a light.

Logistics

Trailhead is just off State Highway 6 near the ‘Our Lady of the Alps’ church at the southern end of the village. There’s a very small pull‑in at the entrance; if that’s full, park in town and walk a short distance to the start. Dogs aren’t permitted.

Best time to hike

Daytime works anytime for a breezy rainforest fix. For glowworms, go at dusk or after nightfall. Warmer months (roughly November–April) bring longer evenings and generally nicer lingering time in the forest. After heavy rain, check current track conditions before heading out.

Should you hike it?

If you want glacier views or a bigger adventure, choose a different track. But as a quick nature break—or a kid‑friendly night outing to meet glowworms—Terrace Walk is simple, close, and satisfying.
