Alex Knob Track

Overview

If you want the best on-foot vantage of Franz Josef Glacier without paying for a flight, this is the climb. Alex Knob Track is a sustained out-and-back slog that pays out huge: big glacier faces, the Southern Alps, and even Tasman Sea glimpses when the air is clear. It’s 10.7 miles total (return on the same path), with over 1,000 m of vertical—plan on a full day.

The Route

You’ll start on a gentle, shared gravel path before the grade bites and the singletrack heads into dense native forest. Roots and rocks are the theme as you zigzag uphill. About two hours from the start, Rata Lookout serves the first proper glacier views. An hour later, Christmas Lookout opens the panorama wider and is a savvy turnaround if weather is turning or time is tight. Beyond here, the forest thins into subalpine scrub and tussock, views expand in all directions, and the final push to Alex Knob delivers the money shot. On the way back, the short ferny detour to Lake Wombat is a calm, low-wind bonus stop.

Difficulty and Conditions

DOC pegs this as an advanced day hike, and the trail earns it: long, steep, rough in places, and slippery when wet. Official time is about 8 hours return, though fit hikers often move faster if they don’t linger. There are no reliable water sources—carry everything. Expect helicopter noise at times near the glacier.

Best Times to Hike

Start early, especially in summer—afternoon cloud routinely builds and can erase the glacier before you reach the top. Winter brings likely snow above Christmas Lookout; if you’re not experienced in alpine winter travel, don’t continue beyond the snowline. Weekdays and early mornings are quieter, and morning light usually treats the glacier best.

Getting There and Parking

The trailhead is on the right side of the Franz Josef Glacier access road at the signed Alex Knob/Lake Wombat carpark. If that’s full, use the main Franz Josef Glacier carpark and walk back along the public walking track. From mid-December 2025 through June 30, 2026, paid parking applies at these carparks (card-only machines; short grace period). Check conditions with the park visitor centre before you go.

Nature Notes

Watch the forest gradually give way to subalpine shrubs and alpine tussock. Birdlife changes with elevation: forest songsters down low, with alpine specialists higher up. On clear days near the summit, you’ll understand why this track is beloved—there’s simply no better ground-level glacier perspective in the area.
