Overview

About Spinc and Glenealo Valley (White Route)

A closed loop of 9.5 km total, waymarked with white arrows, starting and finishing at the National Park Information Office near the Upper Lake. The official listing gives about 3 hours 15 minutes, 380 m of climb, and a strenuous grade, and that feels honest. A recent public route track of the same named White Route came in at 9.33 km around the loop, so treat 9.5 km as the working number.

Why go

  • High views over the Upper and Lower Lakes
  • Clear white waymarking on a defined loop

Heads up

  • Steep steps, rocky ground, and exposed cliff edges

Before you go

Parking

Use the Upper Lake Car Park, the closest practical parking to the National Park Information Office start. A lower Glendalough car park is farther away and adds a longer walk along the valley to reach the loop.

Best time to go

Weather changes fast up here and the cliff-top section is fully exposed to wind and low cloud, which also removes the whole reason to be on it. Good boots and proper rain gear are the baseline. Morning light works well for looking down the valley toward the lakes, and late afternoon suits the Glenealo side. In wet spells the bog and stone can stay greasy for days, and short winter days leave little margin if you start late.

Safety

The route has steep stepped and rocky sections, narrow boardwalk, exposed cliff-top walking, and a bridge crossing. Wet weather makes stone, boardwalk, and bog slick; low cloud and wind can reduce visibility. Cliff edges are hazardous for people and dogs. Dogs must stay on a lead throughout.

  • Flat, easy start along the Miners' Road and lakeshore, or the steep option first, depending on the direction you choose.
  • A hard pull near Poulanass Waterfall on steps and rocky ground gets most of the climbing done in one go.
  • Open mountain and blanket bog and heath on stone path and boardwalk, with a small footbridge over the Glenealo River.
  • The payoff stretch skirts the Spinc cliffs high above the valley.
  • Descent through a gated native woodland exclosure and rocky ground toward the deserted Miners' Village, then a broad, easy return beside the Upper Lake.
Difficulty, surfaces, and exposureThis is a hillwalk, not a stroll.

This is a hillwalk, not a stroll. Expect a sustained opening climb or a long flight of steps depending on direction, uneven rocky sections, wet boggy ground off the built path, and exposed cliff-top walking with long drops beside the line of the trail. Much of the old narrow boardwalk has been rebuilt as stone steps and gravel, with boardwalk sections remaining on the western side. Stepped and boarded sections are narrow and slick when wet, so give way early rather than squeezing past on the edge. The cliff path is for walking, not scrambling or climbing.

From the high ground you look down on the Upper Lake, out along the Lower Lake toward the monastic settlement and Laragh, and back into the open Glenealo Valley. Sika deer are a characteristic sight in the open upper valley, so scan the slopes and river flats. Woodland birds lower down and upland birds on the tops are a bonus rather than a promise.

The information office is the official start, and the nearby Upper Lake car park is the closest practical parking, a short walk from the trailhead. A lower Glendalough car park is farther out and adds valley walking at both ends. Dogs are welcome only on a lead the whole way, and the cliff edges are a genuine danger for a dog that pulls.

For a more compact version of the same terrain, the shorter Blue Spinc route covers the good cliff-top ground with less commitment. The Red route adds a section of the Wicklow Way and is a longer day, so do not confuse it with this loop.
