Overview

About Poulanass Waterfall

Why stop

  • Mossy woodland and rushing multi-step falls

Heads up

  • Steep, slippery footing after rain
  • The falls are modest in dry spells
Poulanass is a small cascade tumbling through a wooded gorge just above the Upper Lake at Glendalough. The drop is modest, and plenty of visitors say as much. What makes it worth the detour is the setting: dark plunge pools cut into rock, mossy woodland, and a short climb that opens up views back over the upper valley and lake.

Plan your stop

Before you go

Best time to go

  • Expect stepped, uneven ground: steps, stone paths, a boardwalk stretch and rough woodland path. Grippy footwear matters more than fitness here.
  • Rain cuts both ways. Flow is noticeably stronger in wet weather, but steps, rocks and boardwalk turn genuinely slippery.
  • Early on a weekday is far quieter.
  • Allow more than the stated 45 minutes if you stop to photograph or if the ground is wet.

Route, start and parking

The natural start is near the information office by the Upper Lake, where trail information and toilets are close at hand. Upper Lake parking is paid. Lower Lake parking is free but adds roughly 1.5 km of walking each way, which is a fair trade if you want to see the rest of the valley anyway. There are no facilities at the falls themselves, so sort out toilets before you set off.

More about Poulanass Waterfall

What visitors actually doWalk the signed Pink Route, about 1.
  • Walk the signed Pink Route, about 1.6 km and roughly 45 minutes, graded moderate with somewhere around 80 to 90 m of climb.
  • Take the short steep ascent beside the falls, pausing at the plunge pools where the water gathers between the steps.
  • Continue above the waterfall, then descend through woodland back toward the valley floor.
  • Fold it into a longer day, since it links easily with the bigger valley walks and the lakeside routes rather than standing alone.
Photography and wildlifeThe gorge is shaded and green, so soft overcast light suits it better than harsh midday sun.

The gorge is shaded and green, so soft overcast light suits it better than harsh midday sun. Slower shutter speeds work nicely on the tiered water, and the ground above the falls gives you the wider valley shot. Keep your ears open on the woodland section too, where woodland birdsong is often the main company, though nothing is guaranteed on a short walk.

What to bringSturdy shoes or boots with decent grip, the single most useful thing you can pack.
  • Sturdy shoes or boots with decent grip, the single most useful thing you can pack.
  • A rain layer, since the woodland stays damp and the steps hold water.
  • Water and a snack, as there is nothing at the falls.
  • A reminder that paid parking applies at the Upper Lake if you start there.

This is a small waterfall in a well-visited valley, so if you arrive expecting a big dramatic drop you will come away underwhelmed, especially in dry spells when the flow drops. The opening climb is short but steep, and the terrain is the main limitation: steps, uneven stone and slippery surfaces need care and steady footing. Treat it as a short, scenic add-on woven into a longer Glendalough walk and it earns its place.
