Albright Picnic Area

Overview

This is a small, grassy picnic spot set on the old Fort Yellowstone parade grounds right in front of the Albright Visitor Center at Mammoth. It’s simple—just four picnic tables—but the setting is unique and central, with quick access to exhibits and facilities next door.

What You’ll Find

Expect a tidy lawn with a handful of tables and no frills. There are no restrooms at the tables themselves; use the facilities at the Albright Visitor Center or the nearby Mammoth Hot Springs restroom building. There are no fire grates here. Camp stoves (liquid or gas) and self‑contained charcoal grills are allowed; campfires are only permitted in picnic areas that have grates (this one doesn’t).

Wildlife

Elk often graze across the Mammoth lawns, including near the visitor center. They’re wonderful to watch from a distance, but give them ample space—bulls can be especially testy during the fall rut. Never feed wildlife (even birds and squirrels). Keep food and trash secured when not in use, and follow standard bear-country precautions: carry bear spray, know how to use it, and back away slowly if you ever encounter a bear.

• Day-use only; no overnight camping.
• Pack it in, pack it out—secure all food, coolers, and cooking tools when not actively using them (a cooler in a pickup bed isn’t secure).
• Stoves and self-contained charcoal grills are okay; no campfires here.

Best Time to Visit

Because there are only four tables, they’re easiest to snag early on weekdays or later in the afternoon when midday crowds taper. Weekends—especially late morning through lunch—are the most competitive. Parking around Mammoth can also fill at peak times, so earlier is better if you’re targeting lunch.
