Why hike it
The Burgess Highline is a scenic traverse tucked above Emerald Lake, threading subalpine forest, meadows, and rocky slopes with broad views over the lake and toward the surrounding peaks. It’s also your on‑trail introduction to one of Earth’s most important fossil areas: the Burgess Shale. Expect prominent signage and a clearly marked junction near the restricted Walcott Quarry spur.
What to expect on the route
Reach the Highline via the Yoho Pass approach to Yoho Lake. About 10 minutes west of Yoho Lake, a signed junction points left onto the Burgess Highline. From here the trail contours the slopes toward the Burgess/Wapta side of the Emerald Lake network. You’ll encounter a major fork with large warning signs: the right‑hand spur leads to the Walcott Quarry and is strictly restricted—access is only with a Parks Canada guide. Stay on the signed mainline unless you’re on an authorized tour.
Trail character is classic Rockies singletrack—dirt with rocky stretches and occasional muddy sections—backed by big lake-and-peak vistas rather than dramatic glacial benches. Some hikers find the walking itself less memorable than other Yoho classics, but the paleontology and the setting make it unique.
Fossils and access
The Walcott Quarry is a UNESCO World Heritage fossil site preserving exquisite soft‑bodied Cambrian life. You cannot visit it on your own. Guided hikes are mandatory, require advance reservations, and come with strict rules (age limits apply). If you join the guided out‑and‑back to the quarry, plan for a long day: roughly 22 km (13.7 miles) total with about 825 m (2,707 ft) of gain and around 11 hours including time at the site.
Is it for you?
If your priority is varied, dramatic alpine terrain, the Iceline and other Yoho routes often outshine the Highline’s walking. If you’re drawn to deep time, big views of Emerald Lake, and a protected fossil landscape—with the option of a world‑class guided quarry visit—this traverse delivers.
Best time to hike
Mid‑June to mid‑October is the reliable season once snow recedes. Go early or on weekdays to keep the traverse quieter. Afternoon storms are common—layers and rain gear are smart. Photographers will appreciate morning light on Emerald Lake from the Highline’s openings.
Tips
- Carry plenty of water and food for a full day; a filter lets you top up at Yoho Lake.
- Watch junctions: from Yoho Lake head west ~10 minutes, then turn left for the signed Burgess Highline; obey all quarry‑area signage.
