Takakkaw Falls

Takakkaw Falls is a major waterfall at the end of Yoho Valley Road and one of Canada’s highest. You can see the cascade near the parking area, but the short walk toward its base brings the roar and cold spray much closer. The red chairs near the falls make a good place to pause.

The access road has tight switchbacks. Vehicles over 7 m (23 ft) must reverse through them, and trailers are not permitted. Yoho Valley Road usually closes from mid-October through mid-June, so check that it has opened before heading into the valley.

The main approach from the parking area is short, mostly level and paved. Visitors sometimes climb farther on rougher ground, where wet rocks and cold spray make grippy shoes and an extra layer useful. The close view is the point: allow time to stop and feel the scale instead of turning straight back after a photo.

The water comes from Daly Glacier on the Waputik Icefield. Meltwater sustains the falls through summer, and early-season snowmelt can make the flow especially strong.

The road end is also the starting point for longer routes toward the Iceline, Yoho Pass, Twin Falls, Laughing Falls and Little Yoho Valley. Those are full hiking outings, not add-ons to the short waterfall walk; plan your time and gear separately.

Summer parking can be competitive, though it varies by day, so arrive early if the falls are a priority. Parking, picnic tables and public restrooms serve the visitor area. The nearby walk-in campground is a separate destination with its own facilities.

For a close photo, include the stream or rocks in the foreground with the falls rising behind them. The red chairs give the scene a clear sense of scale, and the footbridge offers another way to show the river beneath the cliff.
