A Little History

Built by the Yosemite Park & Curry Company to fulfill an early National Park vision for a year‑round, first‑class lodge, The Ahwahnee opened in 1927. It served as a U.S. Navy convalescent hospital during World War II, later returning to hospitality with modern safety upgrades and an outdoor pool. Its interiors helped inspire set designs for The Shining, and it briefly operated as the “Majestic Yosemite Hotel” during a 2016–2019 naming dispute before reclaiming its historic name.
