Vogelsang High Sierra Camp is a backcountry lodging camp below Fletcher Peak in Yosemite's high country. You reach it on foot, not by car. It is one of five High Sierra Camps spaced roughly six to ten miles apart along a wilderness route. From Tuolumne Meadows, the approach via the John Muir Trail and Rafferty Creek Trail is a serious hike: published route descriptions put it at about 14 to 16 miles round trip, with roughly 1,500 feet of climbing depending on the start. This is a full-day destination, not a quick roadside stop.
The camp sits creekside near Fletcher Lake at the base of Fletcher Peak. Evelyn, Ireland, Booth and Emeric lakes are nearby, along with Vogelsang Lake, Pass and Peak for longer side trips. The alpine setting is the draw: open country, granite slopes and evening light on the peaks.
Vogelsang Hikers Camp first opened beside Booth Lake in 1924. Poor drainage, water-supply difficulties and mosquitoes made that location unsuccessful. It moved near Tuolumne Pass in the early 1930s, then reached its present site below Fletcher Peak in 1940. The camp and Booth Lake are separate destinations, even though the older camp once stood beside the lake.
