El Capitan Meadow is a grassy valley-floor viewing area beneath El Capitan's east and west faces. The granite wall rises more than 3,000 feet above the meadow, with Lower and Middle Cathedral Rocks and Cathedral Spires also in view. This is a direct, memorable look at El Capitan without a long walk. Keep some meadow in the bottom of a photo; that open ground helps show the height of the wall.
Climbers are often on the wall in spring, early summer and fall. Bring binoculars to pick out their small movements against the rock; after sunset, their headlamps can appear as tiny points of light. The main view is worth a pause even when no climbers are visible.
You can see the main scene from the road, and designated accessible roadside spaces provide a similar view from a vehicle. Yosemite Valley shuttle stop 9 serves the meadow. An unpaved path leads into the grassland; stay on designated paths and viewing areas to protect its fragile plants and soil. Roadside parking can be limited in busy periods, so the shuttle is a useful fallback. The nearby El Capitan picnic area has tables, vault toilets and grills; potable water is not indicated there.
El Capitan is made of strong granite with few fractures, which helps the cliff stand as one unusually unbroken face. Much of Yosemite's granite formed as underground magma cooled between 105 and 85 million years ago. Glaciers later widened and deepened Yosemite Valley, leaving the steep walls and relatively flat floor that frame this meadow.
The Ahwahneechee name for the rock is Tutokanula. In the story associated with the name, the rock grew beneath two sleeping bear cubs. Their mother sought help getting them down; only the small inchworm succeeded in climbing the rock and leading the cubs to safety.
