Tōtaranui 'Ngarata' Homestead

Overview

Run by the Department of Conservation, Ngarata Homestead is a historic group base tucked beside the huge Tōtaranui campground and golden‑sand beach at the park’s northern end. It’s designed for schools and community groups, but private groups can book it when available. The big draw is simple: your own homestead hub in a prime coastal location.

Facilities

• Sleeps 40 across seven bunkrooms, with mattresses provided.
• Inside the homestead: workroom, lounge, two toilets, wood‑fire heating, laundry, and automatic fire sprinklers.
• Separate amenities block: dining room, kitchen, pantry, drying room, toilets/showers, and a log‑burner.
• Kitchen gear: two commercial stoves, a coal range, microwave, two fridges and a freezer, pots/pans, crockery/cutlery, plus a gas BBQ with gas supplied.
• Important: all water at Tōtaranui must be boiled before use. There are no rubbish facilities—pack in, pack out (nearest transfer station is in Tākaka).
• Coverage is limited; two public telephones sit at the camp office.

Bookings and Costs

Group‑exclusive bookings only. Private groups and schools use different pricing and minimum‑charge rules. As a guide: schools have a lower minimum, while private groups have a higher one; adults and children are charged per person per night, and under‑fives are free. Schools can book up to 2 years ahead; private groups up to 1 year ahead. Summer school holidays may be balloted—plan early.

Getting There

Allow about 2.5 hours from Nelson. The final 12 km into Tōtaranui is narrow, winding, and unsealed—drive slowly. Camp gates are locked overnight: Oct 1–Mar 31 from 7:30 am to 8:30 pm; Apr 1–Sep 30 from 7:30 am to 6:30 pm. A seasonal bus and daily water taxis connect with Mārahau, Kaiteriteri, and beaches along the coast.

What to Do from the Door

You’re steps from swimming, beach and estuary exploring, and kayaking. Short walks include the Pukatea Walk and Headlands Track for coastal views. For a bigger day, head north over Gibbs Hill to Wharawharangi Hut and loop back via Separation Point and the Abel Tasman Coast Track—a classic circuit with varied scenery.

Wildlife

Around Separation Point and nearby bays, expect New Zealand fur seals and busy seabird colonies in season. Close to the homestead, the bush and estuary host native birdlife, and glow‑worms make night walks a hit with groups.

Best Time to Visit

The crunch period is Christmas to mid‑February—great weather but very busy. Mid‑February to Easter usually brings calmer crowds with still‑reliable conditions. For photography, aim for soft morning and late‑day light on the beach; night walks are best fully dark for glow‑worms. If your dates touch school holidays, check availability early and be ready for a ballot.

Need‑to‑Know

• No bins: bring rubbish bags and a plan to pack everything out.
• Bring firelighters/paper for wood fires; check any fire restrictions.
• Laundry needs $1 coins. Drones require a DOC permit.
• For estuary swimming and birdlife, time visits near high tide.
