Overview
Kelman Hut is a high-alpine, 14-bunk hut perched above the Tasman Glacier. It’s squarely for climbers and ski mountaineers who want fast access to big glaciated terrain and grand, all‑around views. Casual walkers won’t find an easy approach here—this is serious alpine country of ice and rock.
What You’ll Find
Inside is simple and functional: bunks, gas cookers with utensils, solar lighting, and water collected into tanks. Toilets are provided. There’s no heating, so pack for true alpine cold even in settled weather.
Getting There
Most parties fly in by helicopter or ski plane from Mount Cook Airport. A glacier walk-in or walk-out is possible but extremely long and rough; expect it to take many hours over broken ice and moraine if you choose that option.
On‑site Routine
All alpine huts in this area use a daily radio schedule with a weather update at 4:45 pm. Instructions are posted in the hut—tune in to get the latest conditions before planning tomorrow’s objectives.
Who It’s Best For
Climbers, ski mountaineers, and glacier travelers who want a strategic base close to routes on the upper Tasman. If you’re hut‑curious but not traveling on glaciers, this one is better admired from photos than attempted.
Fees & How to Pay
Fees are NZD $40 per person per night (NZAC members $20). Pay at the Aoraki/Mount Cook Visitor Centre; Backcountry Hut Passes or Tickets aren’t valid here.
Best Time to Visit
Go during stable weather windows and plan around the 4:45 pm radio update. Midweek tends to be quieter. With its big views, photographers are rewarded whenever the weather clears.
