Kiwi Hut

A 1967 hut reached through three unbridged river crossings.

Overview

About Kiwi Hut

Why stop

  • A remote overnight in the upper Taramakau valley.

Heads up

  • Three unbridged fords make access dependent on river conditions.
Kiwi Hut is a basic backcountry hut on a bush terrace in the upper Taramakau valley. A grassy clearing lies below it, with beech forest and the river beyond. This is an overnight tramp, not a roadside stop; it suits walkers crossing the valley or looking for a remote hut stay.

The approach starts at Aickens Corner on State Highway 73 and takes about three hours. It crosses the Otira, Taramakau and Otehake rivers, all unbridged. After heavy rain, the route can be dangerous or impassable. River levels decide whether this trip is sensible, so check current conditions before setting out.

The current hut listing gives ten bunks and requires bookings. It has a wood burner, a roof-fed water tank and a long-drop toilet. Bring your own meals and a way to treat tank water before drinking it; this is a simple backcountry stay, not a serviced lodge.

Built in 1967 as a New Zealand Forest Service hut, Kiwi Hut was nearly removed in 2004. Local opposition and volunteer care helped keep it in use. A major renovation in 2023–24 retained the original shell while renewing the roof and interior, giving an old bush hut a longer life without erasing its earlier shape.

The hut sits beside a broad river valley, with a clearing, forest edge and mountain slopes around it. Trampers on the Te Araroa and other backcountry routes use it as an overnight stop. Native birds including kiwi and kākā are noted in the valley, though sightings are never guaranteed.
