Avalanche Peak

Avalanche Peak is an 1,833 m summit above Arthur's Pass village and the park's only peak with a poled route to its top. This is a serious alpine tramp, not a roadside lookout: from the village the climb gains about 1,100 m over roughly 2.5 km of horizontal distance. Come for a demanding mountain day and a wide Southern Alps panorama; choose another stop if you lack back-country experience or the weather is unsettled.

A popular circuit climbs Avalanche Peak Track behind the visitor centre and descends Scotts Track by the Punchbowl car park. The route segments add up to about 5½–6½ hours of walking before breaks, so allow a full day. The two trail starts are about 700 m apart on the highway; plan how you will get between them and do not walk along the road to join the ends. Carry food and water for a back-country day.

The lower climb passes through mountain-beech forest, then opens onto tussock and subalpine ground. Higher up, the route follows a narrow, rocky ridge with scree and steep bluffs. Above the tramping-track sections this is expert-level route travel, marked by cairns and colored poles rather than a groomed path. Turn back at the bushline if visibility is poor or the approach has already been difficult, and avoid the final ridge in wind, ice or snow.

Summer and autumn are the usual seasons. Avalanche risk is most common from May to November, but snow can make it a concern outside those months too. A winter ascent needs an ice axe, crampons and the experience to assess snow and avalanche conditions. Dogs are not allowed.

From the summit, the view reaches Mt Rolleston/Kaimatau, Crow Glacier and Crow Valley, Temple Basin, and the Waimakariri River winding through the mountains. The ascent adds its own views: Avalanche Creek's bluffs and waterfalls, then a broad look down Bealey Valley as the route rises above the trees.

For a summit photo, keep a section of the rocky crest in the frame with Mt Rolleston or Crow Glacier beyond it; a tight crop of distant peaks loses the scale and exposure of the ridge.
