Punchbowl Creek Footbridge

Overview

This small footbridge spans Devil's Punchbowl Creek on the popular Devil's Punchbowl Walking Track. It’s the moment the waterfall really pops into view—an early, dramatic look at the 131 m plume before the track climbs to the main viewing platform. Think of it as the quick payoff on a short, well‑built trail.

Where it is and how you get there

Start from the Punchbowl car park at the northern end of Arthur's Pass village, just off SH73. The track first crosses a sturdy footbridge over the Bealey River; a little farther on, you reach the Punchbowl Creek Footbridge with its prime waterfall vantage. The path is benched and well maintained, with steps and numerous bridged streams.

What you'll see

From the bridge rail you get a clean, centered look at Devil's Punchbowl Falls rocketing out of the beech forest. On a damp day the creek surges beneath you, ferns drip, and the whole gully feels lush and alive. Keep an eye out for flitting fantails/pīwakawaka and tomtits in the surrounding beech forest.

Best time to visit

Waterfall lovers should aim for after rain, or through winter–spring–early summer when flow is strongest. For fewer people, go early morning or later in the day; this track is popular and mid‑day sees the most foot traffic. Soft light on overcast days works well for photos and avoids harsh contrast on the falls.

Practicalities and safety

Weather in Arthur's Pass flips quickly—expect wet, cold conditions any time of year. The track includes narrow sections and drop‑offs; keep kids close and stay behind barriers. Surfaces can be slick after rain, including the bridge deck. No dogs (to protect native wildlife). Drone use on conservation land requires a permit.

Wildlife

Kea are often encountered around the village and nearby areas—curious, brilliant birds that will investigate any food or loose gear. At dusk, there’s a chance (more often heard than seen) of great spotted kiwi/roroa in the broader area—move quietly and give wildlife space.
