If you want a big Arthur’s Pass payoff with almost no effort, this is it. From the car park opposite historic Jacks Hut on SH73, the Bealey Valley Track dips into cool beech forest, crosses the sculpted Bealey Chasm, then pops out to a snowgrass clearing with classic views of Mt Rolleston before ending by the Bealey River. It’s short, scenic, and great when you’re tight on time.
This is an out‑and‑back walk. It shares a short section of the Arthur’s Pass Walking Track before branching onto the Bealey Valley Track. It’s about 0.4 miles round trip to Bealey Chasm (roughly 5 minutes one way), or about 1.5 miles total to the formed track end at the Bealey River (around 25 minutes one way, ~50 minutes return). Expect well‑formed trail through beech forest, a bridged chasm crossing, boardwalks, and a brief hill to that snowgrass viewpoint of Mt Rolleston.
Year‑round works, but in winter the section beyond the clearing to the river is subject to avalanche hazard—heed the warning sign at the track end and don’t continue in avalanche conditions. After rain, wet rock and boardwalks can be slick. Midday can be a little busier; early morning usually feels quieter and has softer light in the forest.
Bring a light layer and rain shell—mountain weather flips fast—even for a short walk. Sturdy shoes help on steps and wet boardwalk. Car‑free? Bus services and the TranzAlpine train stop in the village, and it’s a short walk to the trailhead. Want something longer with wide valley views? The nearby Bealey Spur Track is a half‑day option on the opposite side of the valley—just don’t confuse the two.
Past the track end, avalanches have reached this area in winter—turn around at the sign in avalanche season. There are over 90 steps down toward the chasm; take care if it’s wet. No dogs on national‑park tracks here. Pack the basics: warm clothing, raincoat, sunhat/sunscreen, snacks, water, and sturdy footwear.

Avalanche hazard in winter beyond the snowgrass clearing to the track end—heed the warning sign and do not continue in avalanche conditions. Wet rock, steps, and boardwalks are slippery after rain.
