Bridal Veil Walk

Overview

A quick, forested ramble to a signed lookout with a picnic table and distant views of 108 m Bridal Veil Falls plus the surrounding peaks and Arthur’s Pass village. Expect a gentle grade overall with a short stair-heavy dip to and from Bridal Veil Creek. From the village (Punchbowl) car park it’s about 1.1 miles total out-and-back (≈1.8 km), typically 30–60 minutes, with roughly 225 ft/68 m of gain.

Route options

The easiest, most direct outing starts at the Punchbowl car park in Arthur’s Pass Village and follows the Arthur’s Pass Walking Track about 1 km (≈20 minutes) to the lookout, then returns the same way. You can also come from Jacks Hut/Bealey Chasm car park for a slightly longer stroll (about 2.5 km return) with more stairs and a canyon crossing. This lookout is a segment of the longer Arthur’s Pass Walking Track, which links multiple car parks (Punchbowl, Jacks Hut/Bealey Chasm, and Temple Basin). Ambitious walkers can continue toward the pass summit and Dobson Memorial, but most visitors treat the lookout as a short add-on.

What you’ll see

The waterfall is viewed from across a beech-cloaked canyon—great perspective on the top and mid-drop, but you don’t go to the base and parts of the falls can be obscured by trees. The track passes mountain beech forest and patches of alpine shrubland; keep an eye out for dracophyllum, which flushes striking red in spring and summer. The lookout clearing has a picnic table and wide views back toward the village.

Expectations check

This is a mellow, pretty walk, not a dramatic waterfall encounter. Many hikers enjoy the peaceful forest and broad views; others find the falls a bit distant compared with nearby options. If you want a close, thundering waterfall, add Devils Punchbowl Falls from the same area and treat this as a bonus viewpoint.

Best time to hike

November through April is the sweet spot for conditions. For photography, afternoon light works best here—mornings can put the sun behind the falls and wash out detail. It’s generally quieter than the park’s headline hikes, especially on weekdays.

Know before you go

Dogs aren’t allowed. The main highway (SH73) is unsafe for walking—stick to the formed track between access points. Stairs you descend to the creek you’ll have to climb back out, and surfaces can be slick after rain. Weather changes fast at the pass, so carry layers. Access is free; no permits required.
