Pinnacles Entrance Sign

This is the western gateway on SD Highway 240, just south of Wall—the spot where most visitors kick off the Badlands Loop Road. The sign makes a quick, celebratory photo stop and the entrance booth gets you set with a pass and a park map before you roll into the scenery.

• It’s the most convenient place to start the loop if you’re coming from I‑90/Wall.
• Staff here are known to be friendly and efficient, and you can grab the park newspaper/map to plan your stops.

What’s Nearby

Within minutes of the sign you’ll reach Pinnacles Overlook, a popular, high-elevation viewpoint with sweeping views toward the Sage Creek Wilderness and, on clear days, the distant Black Hills. It’s a natural first stop once you’ve entered.

Wildlife

Keep your eyes up the moment you pass the booth—visitors frequently spot bison, deer, and prairie dogs right along this stretch. Drive slowly and give wildlife plenty of space.

Best Time to Visit

The entrance station operates roughly 8 AM–5 PM daily. Weekends—especially late morning to early afternoon—tend to be busiest, while early mornings are typically calmer and faster. If you’re after moodier light for photos of the sign and the first overlooks, sunrise and sunset deliver the best color.

• Payment is card-only here; have a credit/debit card ready at the window.
• If you’re after a specialty interagency pass, you may need to buy it online or at another designated location.
• Pets aren’t allowed on most trails and overlooks you’ll encounter just beyond the entrance.
