Overview
The Six Glaciers Viewpoint caps off the classic Plain of Six Glaciers hike from Lake Louise. Keep going past the tea house and you’ll climb into a dramatic alpine basin where multiple glaciers hang above towering rock walls. It’s one of the most rewarding ways to get close to the ice without technical gear.
What You’ll See
Expect head-on views of the Victoria and Lefroy glaciers with Mount Victoria and Mount Lefroy framing the scene. On warm days you might hear the deep rumble of distant icefalls. Look back down-valley to spot the turquoise ribbon of Lake Louise and waterfalls streaking the cliffs.
Trail at a Glance
From the lakeshore, it’s roughly 14 km/8.7 miles round trip with about 540 m/1,770 ft of gain to reach the final viewpoint. The last 1.1 km beyond the tea house climbs steeper, rockier switchbacks—beautiful but exposed and slower going, especially on the descent.
Tea House Stop
The Plain of Six Glaciers Tea House sits just below the final climb and serves drinks and light fare in season. It’s a perfect refuel before the last push. Expect simple, rustic service and basic pit-toilet facilities nearby. Cash is preferred and card connectivity can be unreliable.
Wildlife
Keep an eye on the rocky slopes for mountain goats and listen for marmots. Birds are common; larger mammals are uncommon in this high, open terrain, but always stay aware and carry bear spray as standard practice.
Best Time to Visit
Mid-June to mid-October is the sweet spot, when snow has melted and the tea house is typically operating. Go early (and ideally on a weekday) to skirt crowds and snag shuttle spots or parking down at Lake Louise. Morning light is lovely on the glaciers; late afternoon adds texture and shadows to the headwall.
Know Before You Go
The route is popular—expect company. The final viewpoint isn’t signed, so continue past the tea house until the valley closes in and the views fully open. Outside the main season, snow and avalanche hazards can linger; plan accordingly and turn around if conditions deteriorate.
