Sulphur Mountain

• Hike: A well‑graded, forested climb mirrors the gondola line—steady, steep, and a bit monotonous, but straightforward and rewarding.
• Gondola: The fast track to the top. It’s comfortable and scenic, but not cheap; book ahead in summer.

At the top, a network of viewing decks frames big‑screen panoramas. A short ridge‑top boardwalk (about 0.5 km) leads to Sanson’s Peak and the old weather observatory, with interpretive panels along the way. The summit building adds comfort—restaurants, an interpretive center, and space to linger—so you can stretch a quick visit into an afternoon. On the lower slopes you’ll also find the famous Banff Upper Hot Springs if you want to turn the day into a soak-and-summit combo.

The mountain takes its name from sulphur‑rich hot springs that helped spark the creation of Canada’s first national park. Up top, the Sulphur Mountain Cosmic Ray Station and the historic meteorological station at Sanson’s Peak nod to a century of science on the ridge.

Keep an eye out for mountain goats and bighorn sheep on the slopes and ridge, plus raptors riding thermals. Deer or elk sometimes browse near the trailhead. Your odds improve at quieter hours—early and late—when the summit thins out.

Weather shifts fast at elevation; it can be windy and cold even in summer. Bring layers, sturdy footwear, sun protection, and water. Some hikers go up on foot and ride the gondola down (or the reverse) to save the knees or the clock.
