Ink Pots via Moose Meadows

Starting at the Moose Meadows / Johnston Creek parking lot, this quieter approach follows a forested path with roots and rocks to the Ink Pots meadow. The route is an out-and-back: the stored line follows the walking corridor once from the lot to the signed Ink Pots access, while the listed distance covers the return trip.

The Ink Pots are shallow mineral-spring pools where water bubbles up through the meadow. The open setting brings mountain views and wildflowers in summer, while winter can be snowy and icy. Parks Canada lists the Ink Pots Trail at 5.5 km one way with about 425 m of gain and 215 m of loss; the mapped Moose Meadows corridor is about 5.74 km one way, or 7.1 miles (11.5 km) total.

Expect a steadier, more natural route than the paved Johnston Canyon catwalks, with undulating forest terrain and a final meadow destination. The path joins the Johnston Canyon trail system near the Ink Pots approach; follow signs and remain on the official route. Plan about 4 hours round trip, and allow extra time for the pools and changing mountain conditions.

Moose Meadows has limited unlined paved parking and no on-site washrooms or water facilities. Johnston Canyon Day-use Area has the more extensive amenities, but it is a separate trailhead. Dogs are allowed on leash; bring water, layers and traction when conditions are snowy or icy. Wildlife is active in Banff, so carry bear spray, keep your group together and check Parks Canada conditions before setting out.
