Johnston Canyon to Ink Pots

This moderate out-and-back follows Johnston Creek from the Johnston Canyon Day-use Area through a dramatic canyon to Lower Falls and Upper Falls, then continues on a forested trail to the Ink Pots, shallow spring-fed pools in an open meadow. The canyon section uses an uneven paved path, bridges, and narrow catwalks; beyond Upper Falls the trail becomes rooty and rocky with a sustained climb.

The route is 5.5 km one way (about 11 km/6.8 miles round trip) and gains about 425 m, with about 215 m of elevation loss on the way out. Plan on about 4 hours round trip, allowing extra time for the falls and the Ink Pots. Return by the same route.

Parking at Johnston Canyon fills quickly; park only in designated spaces. The day-use area has limited paved parking, accessible stalls, flush toilets, picnic tables, and benches. Roam Route 9 provides summer-only transit access. A valid Parks Canada pass is required for the area. Dogs must be leashed and bikes are not permitted on the trail. The route beyond Upper Falls is not wheelchair or stroller friendly. Expect narrow, busy catwalks and slippery or icy conditions in winter; traction may be needed.
