Larch Valley and Sentinel Pass

Starting just beyond Moraine Lake Lodge, this difficult out-and-back climbs through larch forest and alpine meadows to Sentinel Pass. The full round trip is about 6.9 miles (11.1 km) with roughly 750 metres (2,460 feet) of elevation gain, and takes about 4.5–5.5 hours for most hikers.

You’ll reach the Minnestimma Lakes basin first—a perfect breather with the entire switchback line to the pass laid out in front of you. From here the trail steepens into tight, rocky switchbacks between Mount Temple and Pinnacle Mountain. At the top, Sentinel Pass opens wide views back over Larch Valley and the Valley of the Ten Peaks, with a look toward Paradise Valley and the Grand Sentinel.

Trail quality is generally excellent and obvious, but expect loose rock and lingering snow or ice early and late in the season on the upper switchbacks. Trekking poles help. Many hikers stop at Minnestimma Lakes; if conditions are safe, the final push to Sentinel Pass is the demanding payoff.

Best time to hike: mid-September for peak larch colour (crowded), or July–September for generally snow-free travel and wildflower meadows. Shoulder seasons can turn the upper section slick—bring layers and use sound traction judgment.

Logistics matter here. Moraine Lake Road is closed to personal vehicles, so access normally requires a Parks Canada shuttle or commercial transport; reserve early. This is prime bear country: carry bear spray, hike in groups, and check current Parks Canada advisories before setting out.

Bottom line: iconic Banff scenery, a dramatic high pass, and an autumn colour show that is hard to beat. If you want a shorter day, turning around at Minnestimma Lakes still delivers big Ten Peaks views, but Sentinel Pass is the route’s high point.
