About Nigel Pass

Nigel Pass is a moderate out-and-back hike from the Nigel Creek trailhead on the Icefields Parkway. The route follows the old Wonder Road, crosses Nigel and Hilda Creeks, and climbs through subalpine forest and open alpine meadows to the broad pass on the Banff–Jasper boundary. It is roughly 9.8 miles (15.7 km) round-trip, with about 395 m of elevation gain and 60 m of loss, and usually takes 4–5 hours.

Yes—Nigel Pass offers a relatively gentle way to reach expansive alpine scenery and big views without the crowds of some of the Parkway’s shorter headline hikes. It is also the gateway to longer backcountry routes, but the day-hike experience ends at the pass; routes beyond it require additional planning and backcountry skills.

Before you go

Parking

Park at the signed Nigel Creek trailhead parking lot on the east side of Highway 93N, about 37 km north of Saskatchewan Crossing and 13 km south of the Icefield Centre. The trail starts from the old road corridor at the north-west end of the lot.

Best time to go

The trail is a summer-only route. July through September is the most reliable period, while early- and late-season snow, mud, cold temperatures, and higher creek flows can make travel slower and more demanding.

The first part follows the old road corridor, passing the historic horse corral, the former warden cabin, and Camp Parker. Beyond the cabin, the signed trail crosses Hilda Creek and Nigel Creek on footbridges, then continues north up the Nigel Creek valley through forest and avalanche-track openings. The final climb is steeper and more eroded before the trail reaches Nigel Pass and views into the Brazeau River backcountry.
