Overview

A scenic, climb-heavy alpine route to one of the park’s great balcony meadows. Expect roughly 11.6 km total and about 5.5 hours on foot, with a stout 1,280 m of ascent and about 200 m of descent. The path tops out near Gotzenalm (1,685 m) and begins by the lake at Salet (605 m), so this is more about vertical than distance.

Route Experience

Most hikers approach via boat across Königssee to Salet, then tackle the Landtalsteig—a steep, sustained climb that quickly trades lake-edge calm for rugged alpine terrain. You’ll gain views back to Obersee and Röthbachfall as the path pulls into the Landtal, a high valley inside the national park’s core zone. From there, gentle meadows give way to the Gotzenalm plateau and sweeping lookouts.

Highlights and Wildlife

Röthbachfall—the country’s highest waterfall—steals the early show, dropping an outrageous 470 m. Higher up, keep an eye out for quiet movement on the slopes: ibex, chamois, and marmots are possible with patience. Overhead, golden eagles patrol; bearded vultures have been reintroduced to this alpine landscape.

Best Time to Hike

Aim for late spring through early fall when higher trails are generally snow-free and services run reliably. Boat service on Königssee is seasonal and can be reduced in the colder months, and mountain huts typically operate from late spring to early/mid fall. Outside that window, expect snow/ice, short daylight, and closed huts.

Logistics and Huts

The lake approach starts at the Königssee area; you’ll ride the boat to Salet to begin the climb. Along the way, seasonal huts can break up the effort: Saletalm (late April–mid October), Fischunkelalm (June–September), and Gotzenalm (late May–mid October). At Gotzenalm, a short, popular detour to the Feuerpalfen viewpoint delivers the classic look down to Königssee.

Should You Hike It?

If you enjoy big elevation days with real mountain feel, yes—this is one of the park’s most rewarding ascents for the effort. It’s less about a casual lakeside stroll and more about earning high-country views and wildlife moments away from the crowds.
