Fischerei St. Bartholomä

This is a family-run lake fishery with a small snack counter in a timber Fischerhaus, beside the red-domed St. Bartholomä pilgrimage church. The Watzmann East Face rises behind this end of Königssee. Make it a food stop when you’re already visiting the peninsula; the full-service inn in the old hunting lodge nearby is a separate business.

The menu lists smoked trout, char and whitefish (Renke) with bread and butter, along with fish sandwiches, baguettes, fillets and spreads. The seasonal Schwarzreiter are small char smoked on thin wooden skewers over hazelwood. They’re traditionally associated with the late-August church feast, but only appear when the catch allows. The fishery keeps a seasonal schedule with boat service, and sales can end when the day’s supply runs out.

Local history says smoked Königssee char were shipped as far as northern Italy around 1160, and fishing mattered to Berchtesgaden’s monastery during its many meatless fast days. A fishmaster with two assistants is documented at the lake in 1508. Today the family fishery uses gill nets, seine nets and traps at different depths, checking its nets early each morning, from the surface to as deep as 120 metres.

The boat from Seelände takes about 35 minutes each way. There’s no path along the shore from Seelände; reaching St. Bartholomä on foot means a several-hour mountain hike. Seelände’s municipal car park is about a five-minute walk from the pier. Public toilets, including an accessible one, are at the boat waiting room; there are no toilets aboard. Boat service can pause if the lake freezes, so check current service before setting out.
