Obersee – Fischunkelalm – Röthbachfall

The large paid Königssee car park is about a five-minute walk from the pier and ticket office. Board the boat to Salet, the last stop; the hike starts at the landing, not at the car park. Salet is reached by boat or a multi-hour mountain approach, and the boat service is seasonal, roughly mid-April to mid-October. Check the sailing schedule and last return from Salet before setting out. The boat ride, waits and parking walk are not included in the trail distance or time.

From the landing, take the broad path past Saletalm. At the outlet creek beyond it, keep left and uphill toward Obersee; the right branch leads toward Sagerecksteig. The lake path follows the south shore beneath steep rock walls. Roots make the surface uneven, and worn steps climb and descend along the cliffs. Wire and cable rails protect parts of the rock face and lakeside, but some sections are narrow and can feel exposed. Damp patches occur even in dry weather, and rain or wet leaves make the steps slippery. This route is not suitable for strollers.

The boulders on the approach between Königssee and Obersee came down in a rockfall in 1172. Once the steps are behind you, the lake opens into a long, quiet-looking basin between limestone walls, with reflections changing as the path curves around the shore.

At the branch toward Röthbachfall, the route rises gently through an open, sunny stretch, then descends across a meadow toward the falls. Remains of an old cableway stand beside the final approach. The 470-metre Röthbachfall is Germany’s highest waterfall, dropping over the Röthwand in two main stages. You see it from the valley floor at a distance; visitors should not follow steep or loose ground in an attempt to get closer. Treat the established viewing approach as the turnaround.

On the way back, take the short branch down to Fischunkelalm and rejoin the main path afterward. The hut sits on an open pasture at Obersee’s far shore and serves food and refreshments seasonally; count it as a welcome extra, not a dependable year-round stop. The meadow is a good place to take in the lake and the distant waterfall together. When cattle graze there, the hut, animals and falls make a strong sense of scale in one view.

There is no road around Königssee, so cattle travel by boat to the summer pasture. On the traditional return drive they are decorated at the landing before being led back to their farms. It is a seasonal local practice, not a performance scheduled for hikers.

The cliffs belong to the Northern Limestone Alps. Their limestone and dolomite began as seabed deposits about 200 million years ago, then were folded and lifted into the steep walls around the lake. The narrow path is a close look at that geology: the water sits beneath near-vertical faces, and the route repeatedly climbs over rock where the shore leaves little room to pass.

From Salet, Obersee’s near-shore viewpoint is about a 15-minute walk. Turn back there if the steps or full distance do not suit you. You will get the lake-and-cliff setting without continuing to Fischunkelalm or the waterfall.
