Gotzenalm

Gotzenalm is a privately run mountain hut, restaurant and overnight stop at about 1,685 m on the high pasture above Königssee. It sits in Berchtesgaden National Park, with alpine dairy buildings around it and mountain routes continuing into the Hagengebirge and toward the Steinernes Meer. This is a full mountain outing, not an easy add-on from the lake.

Routes reach the hut from the Jennerbahn middle station via Priesbergalm, from Salet via Kaunersteig or Landtal, and from Kessel by a steep climb to Gotzentalalm. One listed hike from Schneibsteinhaus via Unterer Hirschenlauf is 11.9 km with 1,015 m of ascent and an estimated seven hours. The lower trail from Priesbergalm is described as an easier mountain walk, but that does not describe every approach. Choose a route that fits your day and check current mountain conditions before setting out.

From the hut, it is about a ten-minute walk to Feuerpalfen, a natural rock outlook with a railing. Königssee lies about 1,125 m below, with St. Bartholomä and the Watzmann east face in the view. This is the quick payoff to add after the long climb. For a photo that shows the scale, include the church and lake beneath the east face.

The restaurant serves hearty dishes, hot and cold drinks, coffee and cake. Visitors especially mention Kaiserschmarrn and apple strudel. Two dining rooms seat more than 90 people, and the outdoor area has about 120 seats, some sheltered by the building or umbrellas. For an overnight stay, there are 101 beds across rooms and dormitories, and a reservation is required. The hut operates seasonally, so confirm opening dates before making a meal or bed stop part of your plan.

Several alpine dairies and the hut define the Gotzenalm pasture. From here, hikers and mountain bikers can continue into the Hagengebirge or onward toward the Steinernes Meer. If you only want the panorama, Feuerpalfen is a short walk from the hut; reaching the pasture is the larger commitment.
