Hintersee

Overview

Hintersee is a picture‑perfect alpine lake in Ramsau, inside the park’s western gateway. Expect calm water, forested shores, and big mountain backdrops that Romantic painters once obsessed over. It’s an easy win: gorgeous, low‑effort, and close to good visitor info.

What you’ll do

• Walk the relaxed, roughly 3 km loop (about 40 minutes moving time) with plenty of photo stops.
• In summer, rent a pedal or rowboat to explore the shoreline; small electric boats also operate for a fee.
• Swim if you like, but the glacier‑fed water stays bracingly cold.

Facilities & access

• Drive to Parkplatz Hintersee Westufer (paid) for direct lakeside access and toilets. There’s no park entrance fee, but most car parks charge.
• Public transit works: bus 846 runs from Salzburg Hauptbahnhof to Hintersee.
• The National Park Information Point Hintersee (Klausbachhaus, daily 9:00–17:00) sits at the entrance to the Klausbachtal; it’s a handy stop for current trail notes and a small exhibition. A barrier‑free circular trail begins here, and there’s an outdoor accessible toilet.
• A seasonal hikers’ bus runs from Hintersee into the Klausbachtal (toward Bindalm and Hirschbichl) if you want to extend your day.

Wildlife

You’re in prime habitat for chamois, roe deer, red deer, and ibex across the park. Dawn and dusk are best for quiet wildlife moments; keep your distance and let nature be nature.

The lake sits amid the Northern Limestone Alps shaped from ancient Tethys‑ocean deposits. Around here you’ll see rugged dolomite scree and towering Dachstein limestone walls—part of what gives the scenery its drama.

• Summer brings boat rentals and the hikers’ bus; winter walking around the lake is still doable on clear days, but check conditions at Klausbachhaus before you go.
