Zauberwald (Magic Forest)

Overview

Zauberwald earns its name: a fairytale tangle of moss‑draped boulders, clear streams, and footbridges created by a prehistoric rockfall that plunged over 1,000 meters into the valley. The debris dammed waterways and helped shape nearby Hintersee, leaving today’s photogenic maze of stones, roots, and rushing water.

What You’ll See

Expect creekside paths along the Ramsauer Ache, little cascades, wooden bridges, and ferny shade. Interpretive signs along the route explain the local geology and flora, so even a short walk feels like a mini nature lesson.

The Classic Loop

A popular, family‑friendly circuit starts at Hintersee, goes counterclockwise around the lake, turns along the Alte Hinterseer Straße, then drops to the Westermayer footbridge before climbing back through the Zauberwald via steps and footbridges. Paths are generally easy but rocky in places—great for kids who like to explore, less great for strollers.

Logistics & Amenities

The area is open at all hours and free to enter; parking near Hintersee/Zauberwald is paid and fills on busy days. Restaurants and beer gardens ring the lake—many prefer cash, so bring euros. Official National Park guidance notes that toilets are available only in huts and restaurants, not out on the forest trails. Dogs must be leashed; pack out your trash, and skip the drone—the park prohibits them.

Best Time to Visit

Weekday early mornings give you quiet trails, soft creek light, and mirror‑calm views on Hintersee. Late afternoon brings lovely golden‑hour glow through the trees. Autumn is a standout with vivid foliage, but the loop is appealing year‑round. After major storms, trails can temporarily close—check local status before you go.

Wildlife

You’ll mostly notice birds flitting through the canopy and along the water. Posted notices mention reptiles and snakes—watch where you step and keep kids close near the water and on bridges.
