Fossil Discovery Exhibit

Fossil Discovery Exhibit is a compact, open-air museum on Highway 385, about eight miles north of Panther Junction. Follow the self-guided displays through Big Bend’s ancient environments, then take the short path up to the overlook. One visitor estimates about half an hour for both, making it an easy stop to add to a park drive. The exhibit itself is wheelchair accessible and includes tactile displays; the uphill overlook path’s surface and grade are not documented, and a visitor reports it is not ADA-friendly. There is no water at the site, and the National Park Service advises against taking RVs or trailers into the lot.

The exhibits trace about 130 million years of Big Bend’s changing life. They begin with marine animals in a shallow Cretaceous sea, move through coastal and inland floodplains, cross the end-Cretaceous extinction, then reach volcanic highlands and the rise of mammals. Fossils here tell a longer story than dinosaurs alone.

The central gallery is a shady, bench-lined gathering space with low stone walls, bronze skulls of Deinosuchus and Tyrannosaurus rex that visitors can touch, and a full-scale Quetzalcoatlus model hanging overhead. Its wingspan is 35 feet. Sighting tubes point toward distant features, and the shelter’s butterfly roof recalls the wings of the giant pterosaur above you.

The displays connect the animals to this landscape. Big Bend is where paleontologist Barnum Brown discovered Deinosuchus, a giant alligator relative. Agujaceratops lived on the Late Cretaceous floodplain, and Bravoceratops was discovered in the park in 2013. Marine displays include ammonites and sharks; younger fossil beds record mammals such as saber-toothed cats and mammoths after the extinction.

A short uphill walk from the shelter reaches a panoramic overlook of nearby geologic features and fossil-bearing sediments. The Dead Horse Mountains are among the named features in the view; the Gallery itself opens toward the Sierra del Carmen. The exhibit and its view make a natural pair, but the walk to the overlook may be less accessible than the displays below.

A shaded picnic area with tables and a shelter sits beside the exhibit, and benches provide places to pause inside the Gallery. An accessible vault toilet is available. No food service is listed for the stop, so bring a picnic if you want to eat here.
